Missing college student's body found at Uttarpara

Kolkata: A first-year undergraduate student of a reputed college in Park Street area who had been missing since Thursday morning, was found dead beside the railway track near Uttarpara. Police claimed that the student, identified as Hrisheek Koley (18), was seen going out of the hostel of the college located on AJC Bose Road.

According to sources, Hrisheek who was a resident of Singur in Hooghly, had taken admission at the college in Physics (Honours) a few days ago. After passing Higher Secondary (HS) examination, he reportedly wanted to study mathematics, but went for physics instead upon insistence by his private tutor.

Though his name did not feature in the first two merit lists of the college, a call was made to his father Ratikanta Koley from the college a few days ago, stating that Hrisheek had got the chance in the third list. After the admission process, Hrisheek got a room at the college hostel.

During investigation, police came to know from his classmates and roommates that he had attended only four classes out of eight in two days. Meanwhile, he had also expressed that he was going through an inferiority complex as he was not fluent in either English or Hindi. Coming from a suburban family, he also reportedly felt less smart and sharp compared to his peers.

On Thursday after breakfast, Hrisheek reportedly told his roommates that he was going to Mallick Bazaar area to buy something. When his roommates asked whether he was going to attend the class, he reportedly told them that he would come back before the class and would attend it. According to police, Hrisheek was seen going out of the college hostel on CCTV footage at around 11:30 am on Thursday, after which he went missing. It was also noticed that he had turned left from the hostel gate, in the opposite direction to Mallick Bazar.

His mobile phone was also switched off. When police tried to locate his tower location, it was shown to be seen last in Beckbagan area.

On Friday, Ratikanta met with Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime), Murli Dhar and stated that his son had never been to Kolkata before he got the chance to study in the college and thus did not know anything about the city.

After a missing complaint was lodged at Beniapukur police station, as per the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) his picture along with a detailed description was circulated across the state. On Friday night, after a body was found beside the railway track near Uttarpara, Government Railway Police (GRP) found similarity with Hrisheek's details and picture.

Later, his parents were informed and they identified the body as their son's. It is suspected that he might have died due to being hit by a train. However, police are investigating to find out whether it is a case of accident of suicide.
