Miscreants hurl bombs outside TMC leader's home

Unidentified miscreants hurled bombs outside the house of a Trinamool Congress leader at Jagatdal in North 24 Parganas Thursday night for protesting against filling up of a pond.

Police said the Trinamool Congress leader Sanjib Das is a resident of Kaugachia at Jagatdal in North 24 Parganas.

On Thursday night, the miscreants attacked when Sanjib and other members of his family were deep in their sleep. Suddenly, they heard loud sounds of explosion. The miscreants hurled one bomb on the corridor of his house and other one near the main gate.

Sanjib alleged that the miscreants threatened him saying that he should not interfere and instigate local people to fight against the filling up of the pond.

Apprehending that he would either get killed or beaten up mercilessly if he came out of the house then, Sanjib stayed inside. After about 15 minutes, local people gathered near Sanjib's house hearing the loud sounds of the explosions.

The attack at Sanjib's house took place at the time when the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee gave a call to protect waterbodies. Different civic bodies in the state have decided to provide financial assistance to pond owners if they undertake pisciculture in their ponds.

Local people told the police that Sanjib was to come forward to protest against some people who attempted to fill up a huge sized pond in the area. Even at the dead of the night, the local goons had even dumped a truck full of fly ash at one corner of the pond as a desperate bid to fill it up. The local people asked the police to take up the matter and to probe into it properly and arrest the accused as early as possible.

The police are yet to arrest anyone in this connection. Police pickets have been posted in the area to avoid deterioration of the law and order situation.
