Miscreants fire at two Trinamool activists in Jhargram, none injured

Kolkata: Two Trinamool Congress activists from Binpur village in Jhargram had a narrow escape when two miscreants opened fire at them.

The incident took place at Binpur on Saturday night, when the duo was returning home from the party office. Police said that the victims - Bimal Mondal and Mongal Dule, were on a motorcycle when two miscreants stopped their way.

One of the accused took out a gun and shot at them. However, both the victims managed to escape without any injuries. After hearing the screams

of the duo, local residents rushed to their rescue. The accused youths fled from the spot immediately after the incident.

The incident has triggered tension among the local residents. A police picket has been set up in the area.

The district Trinamool Congress leaders have alleged that BJP-backed miscreants were behind the attack. The victims were targeted as they were active members of the party and had been instrumental in strengthening the organisation of their party in the area.

The district BJP leaders, however, denied the allegation, terming the incident a result of intra-party clash of Trinamool Congress.

After being informed, police reached the spot and started a probe. They are yet to arrest anybody in this connection. Police are investigating to know if there was a political angle into the incident or if any past rivalry could have led to the attack.

Local residents told police that the victims were returning home after closing a local party office in the area at around 10.30 pm.

According to the preliminary investigation, police suspect that it was a pre-planned attack. The victims told police that the attackers had come on a motorcycle. Police are conducting raids to nab the culprits who were involved in the attack.
