Miscreants break into house, kill man

A gang of miscreants, suspected to have stormed into a house at Balagarh in Hooghly late Saturday night for looting, ended up murdering a member of the house and injuring his wife.

The incident triggered tension at Balagarh on Sunday morning. Police said that a gang of four miscreants entered the house by breaking the lock of the front door a little after midnight. After entering the house, the miscreants went straight to the room of Sudip Banerjee. The miscreants tried to choke out Sudip with a piece of cloth. After hearing Sudip's cries, his younger brother Sujit came to his rescue. One of the miscreants then took out a chopper and hit Sujit. He fell on the floor of the house. Sujit's wife Jharna who came to save Sujit received injuries on her hand and two of her fingers were severed from the body. She is undergoing treatment at Chuchura Imambara Hospital, while her husband was declared brought dead. The doctors at the hospital said that Sujit died due to excessive bleeding. The body has been sent for the post-mortem. The family members of the victim told the police that the miscreants had their faces covered with pieces of black cloths. They told the police that the main purpose of the miscreants were to loot valuables from the house. As the family members woke up, the miscreants attacked them. Cops reached the spot after the incident and started a probe. Police are yet to confirm the amount that has been looted. Police are investigating all possible angles including whether any family dispute over property.
