Kolkata: Three state-run medical colleges in the city, including the multi-superspeciality SSKM Hospital, allegedly denied admission to a 4-year-old boy from Rajarhat, who had swallowed a small nail.
The baby, a nursery student of Gouranga Nagar Bakul Bithi School in Rajarhat, was taken to SSKM Hospital where the doctors allegedly refused to admit the patient. The victim's father Samiran Mondal, a daily wage labourer, then took the boy home.
As he continued to complain about the pain, his family members on Sunday took him to Calcutta Medical College and Hospital where he faced a similar fate. The doctors gave him some medicine and said that it would heal the patient.
The family members took the boy home, believing that he might have been cured. As his condition deteriorated, he was again rushed to the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on Tuesday morning, where the patient's family members were advised to take him back home and bring him to the hospital a week later, following some medication. The staff members of the hospital allegedly told the boy's father that nothing was inside his abdomen.
Having found no option, the distressed family members finally took the patient to NRS Medical College and Hospital on Tuesday afternoon where he was finally admitted. The boy's father said that he had swallowed a small nail while playing in the courtyard on Saturday.
The matter was brought to the notice of the family members when the boy complained of serious pain in his abdomen on Saturday night. The boy had been having sleepless nights for the past three days, said the victim's father.
The doctors at NRS Medical College and Hospital performed x-ray and other medical tests on the patient. A nail was detected inside his abdomen. The doctors were trying to adopt natural procedures to remove the nail from his body.
