Milk adulteration racket busted in Central Kol, three arrested
Kolkata: In a major breakthrough, the city police arrested three persons from the Munchipara area of Central Kolkata on charges of running a milk adulteration racket.
Acting on a tip off, the police conducted the raid at a house on Baithakkhana Road and arrested three persons.
The two arrested persons have been identified as Dharmendra Roy and Dharmendra Roy (The names of the two persons are the same), while the third one is Bindeswari Roy.
Police seized a huge quantity of materials that they used for adulterating milk and it include 321 litre of milk, 5 kg detergent and different chemicals, arrowroot power weighing around 22 kg and milk powder weighing around 11 kg. The materials are worth around Rs 30,000.
Police had been receiving complaints alleging that adulterated milk is being distributed at certain points in and around the city. Cops had initiated collecting information soon after getting such complaints and came to know about milk being adulterated in a house on Baithakkhana Road in Munchipara area.
On Thursday, police conducted a raid at the house late at night. They suspect after preliminary investigation that all the three persons were involved in the racket of adulterating milk for the past few months.
Investigation revealed that the quantity of the milk increases when materials like detergent, different chemicals, arrowroot powder and milk podwer are added to it. With the increase in volume of milk, the members of the racket make fast money by selling the same to a larger section of people. The investigating officers also spoke to the locals to get more information about the arrested persons and their business.
Police are also trying to find out about the one who sold the adulterated milk.
According to the experts, chemicals those are added to the milk to retain its flavor is harmful to people of all ages. It is more harmful to children and patients. Most importantly, it is not easily possible for a lay man to identify whether the milk is pure or adulterated.
According to a police officer, it is a major breakthrough for them as they can more get information if they are more people involved from the city or its
surroundings.
