Kolkata: Commuters were harassed as Metro services were disrupted in two phases since Tuesday evening.
A 22-year-old youth committed suicide by jumping in front of a train on down track at Shyambazar. The victim, identified as Utpal Bhattacharya, was declared brought dead when taken to R G Kar Medical College and Hospital.
The incident led to disruption of Metro services from Central Metro station to Dum Dum for around 35 minutes. However, services from Chandni Chowk to Kavi Subhas Metro station were normal.
The situation turned worse when a technical snag led to disruption of services from Chandni Chowk to Rabindra Sarovar leading to harassment of commoners as those returning home had to search for alternate modes of transport. However, Metro services from Tollygunge to Kavi Subhas remained normal.
People were found waiting to avail vehicles outside the respective Metro stations leading to traffic congestion in certain parts of South Kolkata. Traffic sergeants were found managing the crowd as important inter-sections of roads were heavily crowded with people along with those who accompanied vehicles carrying idols of Goddess Saraswati for immersion.
