Meeting on hostel repair next week, protest withdrawn
Kolkata: A tripartite meeting to inform the students of the progress of renovation work of the Eden Hindu Hostel has been convened on Monday. The Dean of Students, officials of the Public Works Department (PWD) and representatives from the students will be in attendance.
The meeting was convened after 30 students of Presidency University (PU) commenced an agitation in front of the office of the Dean of Students from 4 pm on Friday demanding immediate completion of the work for the renovation of three wards of Hindu Hostel.
"I have spoken with the students who were demonstrating on Friday night and urged them to lift their agitation. I have told them that a tripartite meeting will be held on Monday and they will be briefed of the ongoing renovation work of the hostel. They have lifted their protest," said Debojyoti Konar, Registrar of PU.
Subho Biswas, one of the students who had been agitating, said that the varsity authorities will "hand over a written statement to us regarding the condition of the three wards, where the renovation work is yet to be over." The Eden Hindu Hostel was shut for repair work in July 2015 and 150 boarders were shifted to a rented accommodation at New Town. Over 60 boarders have so far been accommodated in the two wards where renovation works were completed in November last year.
