Kolkata: A high level meeting was held on Tuesday, in a bid to ensure initiation of "Rajdhani" Volvo bus service between all district headquarters and Kolkata.
Sources said that top brass of the state Transport department and all the corporations under it were present in the meeting, which was held at Paribahan Bhavan in the Central Business district.
It may be mentioned that it was in March, when the state Transport minister Suvendu Adhikari had said that a step has been taken to introduce bus services to connect district headquarters with the city and it will be introduced soon.
Now, in a bid to ensure that the service is started as early as possible, the top brass of the state Transport department have discussed all the related issues in this connection.
Sources said there was discussion to decide the headquarters of which districts will be connected first with Kolkata and the infrastructure that needs to be created to ensure smooth service to the people once it starts.
The service will be introduced from the headquarters of all the districts, including those in North Bengal. An elaborate arrangement is needed so that the service continues without facing any trouble.
The Rajdhani Volvo service will be introduced in phases and if necessary, more Volvo buses will also be brought into service, sources said.
It may be mentioned that hundreds of people travel from different districts to Kolkata every day. So, the introduction of the bus service between the headquarters of all districts and Kolkata will help the commuters, as they will be able to reach Kolkata directly in minimum time.
It may be mentioned that so far in the past seven years after the Mamata Banerjee government came to power, the Transport department has introduced several buses on different routes.
