Manua, Ajit granted life term; parents of Anupam dissatisfied
Kolkata: Manua Majumdar and her paramour Ajit Roy, who were convicted on Thursday for carrying out the cold-blooded murder of the former's husband Anupam Singha, were sentenced to life imprisonment by the Barasat Fourth Fast Track Court on Friday.
Both of them have been asked to pay a fine of Rs 50,000 each, failing which they would have to undergo another year in prison. The family members of the victim have, however, expressed their dissatisfaction over the judgment and hinted at their wish to appeal to a higher court seeking death penalty for the duo.
Anupam's mother Kalpana Singha broke down in tears outside the court room on Friday, following the pronouncement of the sentence. She later told the media: "We would have been satisfied had they been awarded death sentence."
Many of Singha's neighbours were at the court along with his parents, who are residents of Bangladesh and have come here to hear the judgment. They gathered outside the court premises on Friday with posters and placards in their hands, demanding the highest possible punishment for them.
The court on Thursday held Majumdar guilty for conspiring with her lover Roy to perform the crime, while Roy was convicted for executing it. The court passed the judgment after a trial of over 23 months and recorded the statements of 31 witnesses before giving its final verdict.
Singha was found murdered at his home in May 2017 at Hridaypur area of North 24-Parganas. Majumdar had scripted her husband's cold-blooded murder with the help of her lover and the incident had created a sensation across the state. The duo was arrested two weeks after the incident occurred.
Singha, a manager at a travel agency, was brutally murdered by Roy, after he stepped into his house after returning from work. Majumdar, who was a part of the conspiracy, had allowed her boyfriend to enter the house.
The woman had not, however, been in the house at the time of the incident, but she heard the screams of her husband over mobile phone. Roy hit Singha on the head with an iron rod and then slashed his veins with a knife to ensure his death. Roy also called up Majumdar, so that she could hear his dying shrieks over the phone.
