Man held for trying to murder wife

Darjeeling: A man has been arrested for attempting to murder his wife with a knife in Siliguri.

The incident occurred on Tuesday morning at Jabarbhita in Siliguri. The person was caught red-handed and was beaten up by locals before being handed over to the police. Around eight years ago, Suman Das had married Sampa Das. While Suman is a carpenter, Sampa works as a maid. They have two children.

Allegations are that Suman Das used to return home in an inebriated state every night and beat up his wife. On Tuesday morning, a heated altercation broke out between the two. In a fit of rage, Suman took out a knife and attacked his wife. He stabbed his wife multiple times.

Hearing her screams, the neighbours arrived and caught Suman red-handed. They beat him up and later handed him over to the police. A case has been registered against Suman at New Jalpaiguri police station.

In a critical state Sampa was admitted to Siliguri district hospital. She was then referred to North Bengal Medical College and Hospital. She had to undergo a surgery. "She used to be beaten up regularly by her husband since marriage," alleged Ranjit Burman, a relative of Sampa.
