Tension broke out at Baidyabati on Friday morning in Hooghly in connection with electrocution of a middle-aged man when he was returning home late on Thursday night.
Police said that a complaint has been lodged alleging that he was electrocuted when he accidentally touched the shutter of a jewellery shop.
The victim's family members alleged that a live electricity wire was
connected to the shutter to keep thieves away and it resulted in the death of the middle-aged man.
Preliminary investigation, however, revealed that there was waterlogging in the area from where he was passing and he had got
electrocuted not because of touching the shutter. It was raining heavily when the incident took place at around 9.30 pm.
The victim, Prosenjit Sen, was originally a resident of Kamarkunru in Hooghly. He used to work with a publishing house and had been staying in a rented house at Baidyabati.
The owner of the jewellery shop went to the spot after knowing about the incident. He contacted the officials of the power utility that supply power in the area. The officials had confirmed that there was no live wire connected to the shutter.
In the meantime, local people took the victim to the hospital where he was declared brought dead.
The officials had disconnected the power supply of the shop.
The situation turned worse when they came to restore power supply on Friday morning. The victim's family members and some local people staged an agitation gheraoing the officials of the power utility.
