Man dies after falling from tree while trying to flee

A 37-year-old man died when he fell from a tree while attempting to flee after showing indecent gesture to students of a girls' school at Munchipara on Wednesday afternoon.
Police said the victim Manish Rai was a resident of Liluah in Howrah.
Preliminary investigation revealed that some renovation work was done in the school a few days ago and the man had entered the school saying that he came to check the renovated site. He posed as a daily wage labourer working under the contractor Santanu Mondal, who had undertaken the renovation work in the school building.
After entering the school premises, the accused went to a place from where girl students were passing instead of going to the renovated site.
He had shown indecent gestures to the girls who had started crying for help. The headmistress and others went to the spot. The contractor was called to the school. He also brought all his labourers to the school. Manish was identified as the accused and he had also confessed to his guilt. The school authorities and the contractor both decided to inform the police. Soon after knowing that the police will be called, the accused attempted to flee. He ran out of the office room and climbed up a mango tree. Despite repeated requests he didn't come down from the tree. He had somehow slipped and fell down from the tree when it started raining heavily. He became unconscious after falling down. The police found him lying in a pool of blood. Policemen from Munchipara police station went to the spot and took him to Calcutta Medical College and Hospital where he was declared brought dead. Police sent the body for an autopsy to ascertain the exact reason behind his death and initiated a probe in this connection though no complaint has been lodged in this connection yet.
