Mamata's picture defaced in JU, Partha promises action against accused

Kolkata: Higher Education minister Partha Chatterjee on Tuesday reacted sharply against the way a hoarding carrying the picture of the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was defaced by some people inside the Jadavpur University (JU) Campus.
Chatterjee expressed his unhappiness over the incident and said the university authorities must identify the accused and take action against them. He also said if the university authorities do not take any action against the accused, the higher education department will take initiatives in this regard.
The government will not tolerate the defacement of a hoarding bearing the picture of the chief minister and action will be taken against those who are behind the mischief, Chatterjee added.
It may be mentioned here that a hoarding with Banerjee's picture on it was found defaced inside the university campus on Monday triggering condemnation by the vice-chancellor and the state education minister. Trinamool Congress affiliated teaching and non-teaching staff wing of the university had put up the hoarding inside the campus with the picture of the Chief Minister and expressed their thanks to the Chief Minister for announcing Rs 100 crore grant for JU recently.
Vice-Chancellor of the university Suranjan Das while attending a programme on Monday termed this incident as unfortunate and informed that the Executive Council has already taken up the issue with the students and faculty.
It may also be mentioned that a sit-in demonstration was staged inside the university campus with an attempt to dissolve students' union. The agitation continued till Tuesday.
