Mamata, ministers pay tribute on Krishak Dibas
Kolkata: Congratulating farmers on Krishak Dibas, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday stated: "The state government is working to ensure an overall development for farmers as they are our pride."
Banerjee tweeted: "On this day in 2007 innocent villagers were killed in firing at Nandigram. Many bodies could not be found. It was a dark chapter in the history of the State. Heartfelt tribute to all those who lost their lives. In memory of those who lost their lives in Nandigram, we observe March 14 as Krishak Dibas every year and give away the Krishak Ratna awards. Farmers are our pride and our government is working for their all-round development."
Asish Banerjee, the state Agriculture minister, said: "Farmers are getting their due respect after Mamata Banerjee came to power in the state. She fought for farmers and helped them get back their land at Singur in Hooghly. Now Bengal tops among all other states in different aspects of the agriculture sector. Several steps have been taken for alternate farming as well and alls ort of support is given to farmers to carry out the same."
Pradip Majumdar, agriculture advisor to Chief Minister, said: "Atleast four farmers in each of the 341 blocks have received Krishak Ratna award on Krishak Dibas. They get a certificate undersigned by the Chief Minister and also get an prize money of Rs 10,000 each."
Suvendu Adhikari, the state Transport minister, on Saturday paid tribute to those who were killed on this day in 2007 at Nandigram. Innocent villagers were shot dead at Gokulnagar and Bhangaberia in Nandigram on this day.
Plaques were set up in memory of the people who were killed. Adhikari today
visited the place and paid floral tribute.
He said: "Every year he pays tribute to the martyrs on this day and various steps are also being taken to support the people in the area."
The recipients of Krishak Ratna awards are selected through competitions held during Krishak Melas in every districts.
