Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is keeping a constant tab over the South Bengal districts which have already received around 400 mm of rainfall on an average in the past two days.
The South Bengal districts which have received the rainfall mainly in the past two days include Birbhum, Bankura, Purulia, Burdwan, East and West Midnapore.
This comes at the time when the high tide is going to continue till Monday and at the same time the MeT department has predicted heavy rainfall to continue in the next 48 hours.
The Chief Minister is taking constant updates on the situation from the District Magistrates and the top brass of the state Irrigation department. She had been keeping a close watch on the situation since July 21 and giving directions to carry out the necessary steps to help and support people in such a situation.
Rajib Banerjee, the state Irrigation minister, said: "We are keeping a close watch on the situation and doing everything possible." Banerjee was also present in the control room of the Irrigation department and is monitoring the condition.
The state government has also directed the DVC not to release water at this moment and in case if it becomes absolutely necessary, then they have to first consult the state government.
Now, the matter that is worrying all is the prediction of heavy rainfall for the next 48 hours. There will be another 200 mm of rainfall if it continues raining heavily as it is happening now for the next two days.
The state Irrigation department officials are also keeping in consideration that it is also raining heavily in Jharkhand as well. The concerned officials of the state Irrigation department are posted in all the districts and are always in touch with the control room that is operating round the clock.
