Mamata gives government job to Sanjoy Roy's widow

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday met the widow of Sanjoy Roy, who died last month due to alleged 'inadequate treatment" at a private hospital here, and offered her a job at the state tourism department.

Ruby Roy, who called on Banerjee at her Kalighat residence, was handed over the appointment letter to work as a trainee assistant manager in the West Bengal Tourism Development Corporation.

"She talked to me in a motherly way and asked me to make a fresh start as I am young. She advised me to join the job so that my future stays secured," the widow said.

According to Roy, Banerjee also assured her of a thorough investigation of the alleged negligence and inadequate treatment of his husband by the accused Apollo Gleneagles Hospital.

"She has assured me that the investigation against the hospital would go on and strict action will be taken against the offenders," Roy added.

Sanjoy Roy, a resident of Dankuni in Hooghly district who was critically injured in a road accident, died on February 23 at the state-run SSKM Hospital after being shifted there from Apollo.

Roy's relatives and friends accused Apollo of "inadequate treatment" even while raising a huge bill and refusing to allow him to be shifted to SSKM unless they paid up the full amount.

They alleged that the hospital delayed his discharge and relented only after they submitted fixed deposit certificates.

A six-member team set up to probe the allegations against the leading private city hospital found "overall negligence" and a number of other anomalies like improper billing, multiple charges and evidence of not following proper medical procedure during treatment.
