Major fire in Burrabazar warehouse
Kolkata: A major fire broke out at a warehouse in Burrabazar on Friday night. Nine fire tenders were pressed into service and the fire was brought under control within three and half hours. No one has been hurt in the incident.
According to locals, around 12:45 am on Friday night, some occupants of 10, Armenian Street saw smoke coming out of their courtyard. Immediately, they went to check and found an abandoned stack of cartons on fire. Within moments, the fire started spreading to another adjacent building.
Upon receiving the emergency call, the fire brigade reached the spot within few minutes and started spraying water. Primarily, five fire tenders were pressed into action. But later, four more tenders were brought in. At around 4 am on Saturday, the fire fighters succeeded to control the flames. Director General (DG) of Fire, Jag Mohan rushed to the spot at night. Fire minister Sujit Bose also went to the spot. After the fire was controlled, cooling process went on for another two hours. Locals alleged that some people were burning empty cartons to get some warmth. It was from there that the fire spread. The cartons stacked there were full of toys and garments. Due to the fire, the cartons along with the materials inside, were burnt to ashes. The location is close to Nandaram market which witnessed a massive fire in 2008.
The locals panicked as they thought it could be a rerun of the same.
