Major fire breaks out at private bank, none hurt

Kolkata: A major fire broke out at a private bank's branch near Harish park on Harish Mukherjee Road on Sunday afternoon. Around six fire tenders were brought in to control the fire after almost two hours.

Around 3 pm on Sunday some locals smelt something burning in the Harish Park area.

Soon they noticed smoke billowing out of a private bank's branch situated on the ground floor of a three-storey building on Harish Mukherjee Road. The locals immediately reported the matter to Kalighat police station about the incident. Police informed the fire brigade.

But before police or fire brigade could reach the spot, fire had spread all over the place and flames could be seen raging out of the building's ground floor.

Soon police and three fire tenders reached the place and started dousing the flames. But the fire fighters faced difficulties as the entry and exit point is only one. The passage was also narrow and congested.

The intensity of the fire was quite high. Realising the situation two more fire tenders were called in.

After a few moments, the fire fighters used ladders to climb to the first floor and smash the window glasses to let out the smoke. After the smoke was cleared a bit, the fire fighters started spraying water through the first floor.

Later, around 4:45 pm, the fire was controlled. Sources informed that important documents and other materials were burnt to ashes. It is assumed that no fire fighting system was installed in the bank.

The Disaster Management Group (DMG) personnel assisted the fire fighters.

No causality was reported in the incident.

The fire brigade officials may visit the incident spot again for necessary investigation.
