Major fire breaks out at Baranagar Jute Mill
Kolkata: A fire broke out at Baranagar Jute Mill on Saturday afternoon. Around eight fire tenders controlled the fire after two hours' effort. No casualty was reported.
According to the sources, the workers of Baranagar Jute Mill noticed fire at the carpet and finishing department on Saturday. They immediately warned others and went out of the workshop. Within a few minutes, the fire caught the jute stack used for work.
As the materials kept were inflammable, the fire quickly spread all over the carpet and finishing section. Fire brigade and Baranagar police station were informed. At first, five fire tenders were pressed into action. Later, three more fire tenders were sent to the spot.
Upon receiving the news, state fire minister Sujit Bose went to the spot. Primarily, the fire fighters faced several difficulties to control the fire as the workshop was filled with smoke. Around 2:30 pm, they managed to control the fire.
The entire process went on till the fire fighters were sure that there was no pocket fire left in the area. However, the entire workshop was burnt to ashes by then. The cause of fire is yet to be ascertained. Sources informed that the fire officials may visit the workshop premises again in a few days to check the source of the fire. They will also inspect whether the workshop had proper fire safety and management system in place. The Jute mill authority suspect the fire might have occurred due to a short circuit.
The damage due to fire is feared to have gone up to crores of rupees. Apart from the Fire department, Baranagar Municipality will also inquire about the incident and it's cause.
