Majerhat Bridge collapse: Death toll rises to 4 after a month
Kolkata: With the death of another injured victim, the toll in the Majerhat Bridge collapse case rose to four.
A month after the incident, Jamil Hanif, another victim who had received injuries during the mishap, died at his residence on Ripon Street on Thursday night. A medical representative by profession, Hanif had been under treatment at a private hospital at Ekbalpore for nearly a month. He was brought back to his house from the hospital recently.
According to the family members of the victim, he had developed an infection around his waist. The victim could not recover from the shock of witnessing the collapse of the bridge up close. He had been under trauma even after being released from the hospital, family members of the victim said.
A section of the bridge on the arterial Diamond Harbour Road, which was over 50 years old, collapsed on September 4, killing three persons and injuring many others.
Three persons were trapped under the debris, whose bodies were later recovered from there. As many as 21 others, including three women, were injured in the incident. The injured were admitted to SSKM Hospital and a private hospital in Ekbalpore.
Hanif, a middle aged man, was returning home on his motorcycle from Behala along the bridge when it collapsed. He had gone to a medical store in Behala on the day of the incident. He had received injuries in various parts of his body. The local residents rushed him to the private hospital. The doctors in the hospital told the family members that the victim had lost sensation in his legs due the accident. Around three days ago, his family members had decided to take him home as his condition improved.
According to the victim's relatives, he had developed an infection in his waist two days ago. The exact cause of his death, however, is yet to be confirmed.
