Former state Transport minister Madan Mitra averted a major accident on Tuesday when he got stuck in an elevator at the Metro office in Shyambazar which had a free fall from the sixth floor following some technical problems.

Mitra went to the Metro office to oversee a meeting of the workers' union there.

After the meeting concluded, the former minister took an elevator from the sixth floor of the building to get downstairs.
After he boarded the elevator along with some others, it suddenly got stuck following a technical glitch.

Mitra alleged that he remained trapped inside the elevator for nearly an hour which the Metro officials are not ready to accept.

Senior Metro officials and the engineers rushed to the spot and some mechanics were called.

It was found that a string that helps an elevator to ascend and descend was not working. It was said that the mechanics then tried to bring the elevator to the ground floor when it had a suddenly started falling from the sixth floor.

Mitra received injuries on his waist and was rushed to a hospital where an X-Ray was conducted on him.

Mitra alleged that the power went off inside the elevator and also said that there was no liftman inside the elevator.

Some members of the INTTUC alleged that the elevator had not been working properly but the Metro officials did not take any steps to repair it despite repeated pleas. Police have started an investigation in this regard.
