London Police thanks city cops for safeguarding UK citizens from cyber crime
Kolkata: London Police has thanked Kolkata Police for busting two call centres located in Kolkata from where United Kingdom (UK) citizens were being cheated.
Senior Kolkata Police officials informed that Director of National Fraud and Cyber Crime, City Police Fraud in London Police, Jonathan Frost called up Commissioner of Police (CP), Kolkata Anuj Sharma to express his gratitude and appreciate the steps taken to stop such illegal call centres.
According to sources, not only Frost, CP, Metropolitan Police in London also thanked Sharma and his team for cracking the case which had been lodged in London.
After getting the call from London Police, Sharma assured Frost regarding cooperation in future. On October 16, lawyer of Microsoft Corporation in India identified as Bhupinder Singh Bindra lodged two separate complaint at the Cyber Crime police station of Kolkata Police against two call centres which were involved in illegal activities. An officer of London Police was had also arrived in the city to accompany Bindra.
Bindra was informed by the Microsoft Corporation that the racketeers are cheating citizens of USA and some other countries by pushing malware and viruses into the victim's computers. The modus operandi of the racketeers was to send a pop-up message to a group of computer users stating that the computers had incurred a technical problem. When the computer users contacted the call centres, the accused persons used to convince them and take the control of the computers through remote access software. As soon as the accused persons got access to the computers, they used to install some malwares or viruses in the system. Later, the accused persons demanded money to unlock the computers.
After getting the information, Kolkata Police busted two such rackets which were operating using two call centres in Topsia Road and Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Road area on Wednesday.
Seven persons were arrested from those two call centres. Earlier, the police was informed about USA citizens were getting duped. But in due course police came to know that UK citizens were also in the list of the accused persons. It may be mentioned that in London Police has registered around 20, 000 of such complaint last year.
