KOLKATA: State BJP Mohila Morcha President Locket Chatterjee and other women leaders of the party have been arrested from Dharmatala on Monday when they were staging protest against the Siliguri rape and murder case.
Chatterjee and other leaders took out a rally from BJP office to Dharmamtala to protest against the Siliguri rape and murder incident. They started blocking roads as soon as they reached Dharmatala. The incident led to huge traffic congestion in the area. This had prompted the senior police officers to rush to the spot. They urged the protestors to lift the road block. But the BJP Mohila Morcha leaders' remained unmoved by the appeal of the senior police officers and continued the agitation. A scuffle broke out between the police personnel and Mohila Morcha activists, which resulted in minor injuries on some policemen.
As the protestors refused to lift the agitation, police had no option other than arresting the Mohila Morcha activists. The situation was brought under control following the arrest of the activists. As many as 19 activists were arrested in the incident.
The rally was organised by BJP Mahila Morcha in connection with the murder of an 8-year-old girl in Siliguri. BJP's women wing created much flutter over the issue alleging that the girl had been murdered following sexual harassment. Police have taken step in this regard and arrested a person in this connection with the murder so far.
It may be mentioned here that clashes broke out between police and the local BJP leaders in Siliguri's Janta Nagar area on last Sunday when the latter held a protest in connection with the rape and murder of the girl. Five policemen were also injured in the clashes.
