Labourer dead after speeding car runs him over

A daily wage labourer, whose identity is yet to be ascertained by the police, died at a hospital after being hit by a speeding car in Gandhi Colony area of Jadavpur late on Saturday night.
Police said that the victim aged between 32-36 worked as a daily wage labourer with a private telecom company and was at the spot on Saturday night when the car had hit him from behind.
The intensity of the accident was such that the victim fell at a distance after being hit by the vehicle. The local people informed the police that the victim was laying some cables in the area at the time of the accident.
Witnesses informed the police that the car was being driven at a high speed when the accident happened. They said that the victim was working by the side of the road when the car hit him. They heard a scream and found that the victim was lying in a pool of blood on the side of the road. Police suspect that the driver of the vehicle might have been drunk.
The victim had received several injuries in various parts of his body.
They informed the Jadavpur police station about the incident. Police reached the spot and took the victim to the hospital. They were also trying to know if the car had any other occupant in it. Police also came to know from the local people that after hitting the victim, the driver sped off with the vehicle and disappeared.
While investigating, police came to know that the victim was originally from Murshidabad and had been staying in the city for some time. After being informed, the police reached the spot and rushed the victim to MR Bangur Hospital where the doctors declared him brought dead.
The body has been sent for the post-mortem examination. Police are trying to know the identity of the driver and the owner of the vehicle. They have started an investigation and are examining CCTV footages to trace the accused driver. They have also started a probe to nab the culprit and interrogate the witnesses in this connection.
