Kolkata shivers on coldest day yet at 12.6 degrees, mercury may touch 10 degrees by Christmas
Kolkata: The temperature in the city dropped to 12.6 degree Celsius on Sunday, making it the coldest day of the season so far.
The people in Kolkata have already started feeling the winter chill. The Regional Meteorological Centre at Alipore said that the mercury will go down further during Christmas. According to the weather office prediction, the city's temperature may touch 10 degree Celsius.
A senior official from the Alipore Met office said the mercury has already dropped by a few notches in last couple of days. The temperature of the city and its adjoining areas may plunge to 10 degree Celsius by the end of this month. City dwellers will feel the winter chill intensify during Christmas.
The official also said that as the level of water vapour is high in the city, the air is filled with mist, especially in the morning. The temperature will drop further once the vapour evaporates. During the morning, the sky may remain misty in the next few days but will clear up later in the day.
Temperature dropped to 3.8 degree Celsius in Darjeeling, while other North Bengal districts like Jalpaiguri and Cooch Behar recorded 8.8 and 9.1 degree Celsius respectively on Sunday. The mercury remained at 10 degree Celsius in Bankura, 10 degree Celsius in Murshidabad, around 11 degree Celsius in North 24-Parganas and 12 degree Celsius in South 24-Parganas. East Midnapore registered 10.2 degree Celsius, with Purulia at 7.6 degree and Birbhum around 10 degree Celsius.
It may be mentioned here that on December 21 the city recorded the coldest day of the season till then, as the temperature touched 13.6 degree Celsius. The uninterrupted flow of the northwesterly wind has also brought the chill into the South Bengal districts, thereby pushing down the mercury by a few notches.
A low pressure trough over Bay-of-Bengal and the cyclonic circulation had interrupted the flow of the northwesterly last week, which resulted in a slight rise in temperature. As the low pressure trough cleared, the mercury started plunging down in the city and its surrounding areas.
The Alipore Met office also said that as there is no possibility of low pressure in the next few days, the temperature will continue to remain below 13 degree Celsius in the city. However, there may be some occasional rise and fall in the temperature, which is common during this season.
