Following the directions of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to ensure complete e-governance in the state, Kolkata Police are soon going to introduce e-office system for fast execution of tasks.
The project will be implemented with the help of the state Information Technology (IT) department and the state Home department.
Webel will be implementing the project by introducing State Wide Area Network (SWAN) in 168 offices of the city police.
Sources in the state secretariat said that the state IT department has sanctioned Rs 3.31 crore for the project. The remaining expenditure that is around Rs 1.37 crore will be given by the state Home department. According to an officer of the Kolkata Police, at present there is an Intranet system available for communication among different offices including the police stations of the city police.
Now, Webel is going to extend 155 Mbps "secure close network" under the new project at all the 168 offices of the Kolkata Police that include all the police stations, circle offices and offices of senior police officers at Lalbazar.
After introduction of the "secure close high speed network" in all the offices, the Kolkata Police have plans to introduce the e-office system in which there will be no more need to take a file physically from one office to another. The files will get transferred online to the concerned officer and at the same time with other government departments as well if needed. Moreover, the status of a particular file can also be easily known using the e-office system. Work orders, sanctions to a particular project, etc everything can be done using the e-office system.
This comes at the time when e-office has become immensely successful in different departs of the state government departments including the Finance department and the Home department.
In that case, the hosting of the database server for the e-office system will be in the State Data Centre. Now there is a limited Internet connection under SWAN that allows functioning of only one video conferencing system in the city police's headquarters at Lalbazar. But with the implementation of 155 Mbps Swan link, several units for video conferences at a high speed can be conducted.
Moreover, the city police will be getting a secure data service at a high speed for surfing Internet with necessary restrictions as per the policy that will be communicated to the Webel authorities by the Kolkata Police. When contacted, Jadugopal Mondal, Deputy General Manager of Webel, said: "It will take around three months time from the day of commencement of the work to complete the implementation of SWAN in all the 168 offices of the Kolkata Police."
