Mamata congratulates Gopal Gandhi as Vice-Presidential nominee

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday congratulated Gopal Krishna Gandhi for being unanimously chosen as a candidate for the post of the Vice-President by all the Opposition parties.

Banerjee tweeted: "Congratulations to Gopal Gandhiji for being the unanimous choice of all Opposition parties for Vice President. His credentials are his biggest asset."

It is significant that the JD (U) which took a different stand from the other Opposition parties this time attended the meeting in which 18 Opposition parties decided their candidature in Gandhi for the Vice-President, the elections for which is slated to take place on August 5. After the meeting, the Opposition announced the name of their candidature.

It was Banerjee who proposed the name of the former Bengal governor as his candidature would be accepted by all the Opposition parties. Many feel that it is a significant development as all the Opposition parties have expressed their consent over a candidature whose name has been recommended by the Bengal Chief Minister.

The move is significant especially at a time when various Opposition parties across the country are trying to create a united platform against the government at the Centre.
