The Calcutta high court on Tuesday directed the Centre to file an affidavit stating the reason behind not being able to provide Central Reserved Police Force (CRPF) as asked by the state government to tackle the situation in Darjeeling.
The Division Bench of acting Chief Justice Nishita Mhatre and Justice T Chakraborty has also directed the state government to file another affidavit on the present situation in the Hills and deployment of the state forces in Darjeeling.
Both the affidavits have to be filed before the Court by July 13. It may be mentioned that the Centre is yet to deploy the additional CRPF forces despite being asked to by the state government. The court has also expressed concerns over the indefinite period bandh called by GJM. Earlier, it had directed both the Centre and the state government to sort out the issue. The court asked CBI why nothing was being done to ensure stay of GJM chief Bimal Gurung, his wife Asha, Roshan Giri and others in Kolkata as directed by the court earlier in connection with framing of charges of Madan Tamang killing case. On December 19, 2016 while granting bail, the court had directed them to stay in the area under the jurisdiction of the Kolkata Police.
