Elderly man shot at, another youth killed in two separate incidents

In separate incidents, two persons including an elderly man were shot by some miscreants in different places in Hooghly on Saturday night.
The elderly person is fighting for his life at Calcutta Medical College and Hospital while the other person was declared brought dead after being taken to the hospital. The first incident took place in Baidyabati area of Hooghly when 65-year-old Sudan Patra was returning home from a crematorium. Three miscreants came on a motorcycle and blocked his way. One of the accused took out a gun and shot him from a point blank range. The victim fell on the ground after receiving a bullet injury on his abdomen. After hearing the sound, the local residents rushed to the spot and found the victim lying in a pool of blood. The local residents rushed the victim to the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital.
According to preliminary investigation, police suspect that an old rivalry might have led to the incident. Police also came to know that the victim was earlier involved in the promoting business. Police have arrested one person in this connection so far.
In another incident Atanu Ghosh (21), a resident of Bibirber area in Hooghly was shot dead by some unidentified miscreants. The incident occurred at around 10.30 am when the Atanu was inside a local club.
Three miscreants came on a bike and called Atanu by his name. When he stepped out of the local club one of the miscreants asked him if he was Atanu. As he replied in affirmative, one accused took out a gun and shot him from point blank range. The victim received a bullet injury on his head. He was declared brought dead when he was taken to the hospital by the local residents. The local residents told the police there were three miscreants who came to the spot with their face covered with a pieces of clothes. The miscreants fled the spot immediately after the incident.
Police rushed to the spot and started a probe in this regard. They are conducting raids to nab the culprits. Police suspect that an old rivalry might have led to the murder.
It may be mentioned that two months ago, one Ajay Pandit was shot dead in the same area by some miscreants. Local people alleged that police failed to take any steps against the criminal activities that are rampant in the area.
