CPI(M) on Tuesday organised a rally at College Street against the state government's decision to impose a ban on processions on the thoroughfare on weekdays. However, rallies can be held on Sundays and other holidays. Left Front chairman Biman Bose and CPI(M) state secretary Suryakanta Misra addressed the gathering. There was heavy deployment of policemen but police did not stop the participants from holding the procession. Rallies from different parts of Central and North Kolkata congregated at College Street.
It may be recalled that some students of Calcutta University had requested CM Mamata Banerjee in the administrative review meeting which was held in Hooghly on June 1 to impose a ban on rallies in College Street which is the educational hub of the city. The students said that because of the microphones which are used during the rallies, studies in Presidency and Calcutta Universities and Hindu and Hare School are badly affected on the days when processions are held.
