Presidency University is the first institution in Bengal that has incorporated a senior official of Kolkata Municipal Corporation in the committee on vector borne diseases.
Professor Anuradha Lohia, vice-chancellor of the University recommended Debashis Biswas, vector control officer of KMC in the committee on vector borne diseases.
The health wing of Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) led by Atin Ghosh, member, Mayor-in-Council visits state-run, private and central government institutions as a part of the drive against malaria and dengue every year. If mosquito larvae are found in the institutions where they have visited, the KMC team recommends the steps that should be taken to check spread of the disease.
Though KMC conducts sweeping and cleaning of roads on which the institutions are situated regularly, it is the responsibility of the institutions to clean the premises and ensure that the overhead tanks and underground reservoirs are covered and the premises are cleaned regularly. It may be mentioned that KMC is conducting anti-larvae drive throughout the year along with awareness campaigns. Senior civic officials said that though the institutions where mosquito larvae are found take immediate measures to clean up its premises, after some days, the operations are not carried out seriously. Presidency University has set up a committee to carry out the programme against vector borne diseases seriously.
