A fire broke out at a bakery shop near bridge number 4 in Park Circus on Sunday morning triggering panic among the local residents. No casualty has been reported in the incident.
Police said a bakery shop situated on Dr Biresh Guha Street suddenly caught fire and it soon spread to other adjoining shops. The locals saw smoke billowing out of the bakery shop and called the fire brigade.
The locals panicked as the area is pretty congested and the fire spread quickly. The fire department officials are yet to confirm which shop had caught fire first.
Seven fire tenders were pressed into action to douse the flames. Police also reached the spot immediately after the incident and cordoned off the entire area. The local residents also tried to take part in the act but could not be of much help as the flames spread quickly.
The traffic movement was restricted in the area. The fire fighters evacuated people from the area as they found that the fire had spread from one shop to several others.
The firemen initially faced difficulties to douse the flame as the area was covered with thick black smoke. They struggled for about two hours and brought the situation under control.
The fire department officials have, however, not confirmed if it actually originated at the bakery shop and later spread to the other shops. They are yet to confirm that.
The fire brigade and police are yet to ascertain the extent of the damage. According to fire department officials, minimum damage has taken place as all the shops were closed at the time of the incident.
According to preliminary investigation, police and fire brigade officials suspect that the fire might have been caused following the bursting of a gas cylinder that was kept inside the bakery shop.
The proximity of a hospital close to the shops that were gutted made the situation more complicated among the locals.
