Three persons including a woman were killed after being run over by a local train at Champahati railway station in Sealdah South section on Sunday morning. Five others were reportedly injured in the incident and are undergoing treatment at the hospital.
Police said that the victims were fish sellers who put up their stalls along the railway track. The victims were selling fishes as usual along the railway track when a Sealdah-bound Canning local suddenly came on the track. In the process of fleeing on seeing the approaching train, five persons were injured.
According to the police Pintu Mondal and Mamani Mondal died on the spot while one succumbed to his injuries later in the hospital. Police are yet to ascertain his identity. According to the police all three were fish sellers who used to live in a nearby area. The incident took place at Tardaha area near Champahati railway station in South 24 Parganas at around 6 am.
After being informed, the Government Railway Police rushed to the spot and recovered the bodies and sent them for post-mortem. The local people alleged that some fish sellers have been selling their fishes on the railway tracks while some others were doing the same thing along the railway track. Police have started a probe in this connection.
The local residents, however, alleged that putting up stalls by the side of the railway tracks is a usual practice in the area. The fish sellers were often requested not to sit near the tracks but they did not pay heed to the warnings.
A senior officer of the GRP Sealdah said that as it was Sunday many people thronged there to buy fishes. As the area became crowded, nobody noticed the approaching train. Eyewitnesses said that the train blew its horn when it was nearing the station.
