Rain causes traffic mess in parts of city

Torrential rain accompanied by squall lashed the city on Friday afternoon causing massive traffic snarls. The Alipore Meteorological Office has predicted light to moderate rain in the next 48 hours when the city recorded 47.5mm rainfall in the last 24 hours. The rain with squall hit the city around 2 pm.

There was more rain in North and Central Kolkata than South Kolkata and southern suburbs. The rain affected traffic movement badly. The traffic movement got slowed down causing massive traffic jams around Sealdah, Manicktala, Raja Rammohan Sarani and Chittaranjan Avenue. Cars were seen standing bumper to bumper. Homebound commuters, particularly children, were greatly inconvenienced.

A senior police officer said because of rain, the traffic movement got slowed down as a result, the volume of traffic spilled over to the adjoining lanes and by lanes creating bottlenecks.
