Soon, Bidhannagar Commissionerate to get parade ground

state-of-the-art parade ground along with police line and other infrastructure of the Bidhannagar Commissionerate will come up on five plots of a total of 5.91 acre in New Town.

The West Bengal Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (WBHIDCO) is giving the land to the Home Police Department for setting up the parade ground, police station, office and barrack, town police outpost, police line, etc in New Town.

WBHIDCO is giving the land to the Home Police Department for a lease of 99 years and the total lease amount is around Rs 24.77 crore.

The decision to set up the parade ground and other infrastructure including the police line was taken in a meeting of the Standing Committee of the Cabinet on Industry, Infrastructure and Employment. The meeting was headed by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who is also the state's Home minister.

Sources in the state Home department said that all the five plots have also been identified in New Town. The financial sanction of the lease amount has also been given.

Soon after coming to power, the Chief Minister had set up five police commissionerates — Bidhannagar, Howrah, Barrackpore, Siliguri and Asansol-Durgapur Police Commissionerates.

The Bidhannagar Police commissionerate had initially started with nine police stations including Electronic Complex Police Station, Lake Town Police Station, Baguiati Police Station, New Town Police Station, Bidhannagar East, North and South police stations. The Airport and NSCBI Airport police stations are also under the jurisdiction of Bidhannagar Commissionerate.

With the success of the newly-formed commissionerate in better policing, later, more number of police stations were brought under the jurisdiction of Bidhannagar Commissionerate. In September 2014, Rajarhat Police Station was brought under the jurisdiction of Bidhannagar Commissionerate. Women police stations were also set up.

With increase in the area under the jurisdiction of the commissionerate, the necessity of the proposed infrastructure was felt.

Mainly, setting up of the police line and barrack were essential for accommodation of policemen. At the same time, without a parade ground, the task for the policemen had become extremely difficult. Thus, the decision to set up the state-of-the-art parade ground was taken.

Since the lands have already been identified, it would not take much time to initiate the work to set up the proposed infrastructure, said the state government official adding that a major work for the policemen will get executed with implementation of the project.
