Health services in jeopardy at hospital post power cut

Health services were affected at Chandannagar Sub-Divisional hospital due to a power cut that lasted for two hours on Wednesday morning. The hospital authorities have ordered a probe into the incident.

Various departments of the hospital including the emergency plunged into darkness at around 6.30 am on Wednesday as the power went off which was restored at around 9 am causing serious inconvenience to the patients. The doctors in the hospital had to treat patients by using their mobile phones. The prolonged load-shedding led to an agitation by the patients and their family members who visited various departments this morning. They alleged that the hospital authorities did not take enough steps to restore normalcy.

It was learnt that the doctors were carrying out a surgery at the emergency department on an accident victim who was brought to the hospital early on Wednesday morning. A person whose identify is yet to be ascertained by the police met with an accident on GT Road and was rushed to the hospital by the local people. As the doctors were tending to his injuries, the light suddenly went off. The doctors faced serious problems in treating the patient as there was load-shedding. A backup generator was available in the hospital but it could not be used due to want of a technical person. As a result of this, the doctors in the emergency ward decided to continue the treatment by using torch lights.

The hospital sources said that the generator could not be operated in the hour of crisis as there was no technical person who could operate it. The hospital staff members failed to get a technical person who could operate the generator.

Hospital authorities haveassured that a detailed probe would be conducted into the incident.
