Protest after paramedical students asked to leave lab over MCI visit

: Tension ran high at North Bengal Medical College and Hospital on Tuesday morning when some paramedical students of the medical college ransacked a portion of the college building and gheraoed the principal after they were asked to leave the lab during a visit of the representatives of the Medical Council of India (MCI).

The incident took place when some of the staff members of the medical college asked the paramedical students to go out of the college laboratory as the MCI officials would visit there. This, however, did not go down well with the students who started an altercation with the staff members. They started staging a demonstration in front of the room of the principal and also gheraoed him for few hours.

The students said that they were insulted and a section of the staff members of the medical college misbehaved with them. The medical college authorities called the police who in turn rushed to the college and tried to pacify the agitating students. The situation became complicated when the students attacked the police. The agitating students damaged some furniture and ransacked a portion of the college. Senior police officers tried to calm down the mob but failed to do so as they continued with violence. The police had to resort to mild lathi-charge to control the situation. The gherao was also lifted following the intervention of the senior police officers.

The incident triggered tension among the patients and their relatives following the incident but the police brought the situation under control after couple of hours.
