A 24-year-old housewife committed suicide by hanging herself at her in-laws' house on Rameswar Malia First Bylane in Howrah late night on Saturday.
Her husband and father-in-law were arrested after a complaint was lodged with Howrah police station on Sunday morning.
Police said Nitu Prasad (24) got married in December 2012. For the past five years her father was made to give money to her in-laws several times. It is being alleged that her in-laws recently started putting pressure on her again to bring more money from her father but it was not possible for her father to give the money anymore.
Her in-laws started torturing her when she told them that her father was incapable of giving the money. On Saturday night when everyone of her family was deep asleep, she committed suicide. The police sent the body for an autopsy and initiated a probe on the basis of the complaint lodged by the deceased's father. Police arrested Raj Prasad, Nitu's husband, and Desarat Prasad, her father-in-law, from their residence. The victim's mother-in-law and sister-in-law managed to flee when the cops went to their house.
In another incident at Bhangar in South 24 Parganas, a five-month pregnant woman was set on fire by her husband and in-laws after her parents failed to give them dowry.
Sultana Khatun was admitted to Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital with severe burn injuries. She is as of now fighting for her life.
Police said that the victim Sultana Khatun had married Gulam Mustafa only seven months ago. There was a heated altercation with the victim and her husband.
Local people went to their house hearing the woman's cries for help. The victim's husband told the neighbours that Sultana had attempted suicide by setting herself on fire. So the local people sent Gulam with her in an ambulance to the hospital, where the police arrested him after the woman was admitted. The hospital is under the Beniapukur police station and the incident took place at Bhangar. Thus, the Beniapukur police station handed over the case to Bhangar police station.
