Three under-trial prisoners were brought back in custody after they escaped from the police cell in Malda Medical College and Hospital. Police said that these prisoners broke the window grille of the cell in the hospital early on Saturday and fled. But the officers arrested them from their villagers before they could escape.
Police said, three under-trial prisoners, Jhantu Mahaladar (28), Jarjees Shekh (30) and Joseph Tudu (32) were taken to the cell of Malda Medical College and Hospital a few days ago. Police put these prisoners in the same cell and they broke the window grille before escaping from there. "Mahaladar and Shekh went to their residences to take some money before running away from the state. Our officers arrested them there.
Tudu was also hiding in his village and trying to get money from his friend. The officers arrested him before they he could escape," said a police officer. Mahaladar and Shekh used to steal motorbikes in Malda town. Police arrested them last week and the accused were produced before the court. The court remanded the two accused persons to judicial custody. Mahaladar and Shekh were shifted to the hospital cell as they were physically unwell.
On the other hand, Joseph Tudu who had allegedly killed his wife over family disputes, was also taken to the hospital cell after he fell ill last week.
"We suspect that three of these accused persons made the plan together to break the window grille and escape from there. The constables who were guarding the cell, informed us that the old iron grille was so weak that it was easily disconnected from the wooden frame," the officer said.
However, police started an investigation to know that how this incident took place. "An inquiry will be initiated," the officer added.
