Mystery shrouds the death of an elderly woman whose body was found inside her rented house at Netaji Nagar area.
The victim has been identified as Gouri Sen. Police said that the victim, a retired employee of North Bengal State Transport Corporation (NBSTC) had been
staying at her rented house at Netaji Nagar alone for quite a long time.
After retiring from job, she married one Debabrata Chatterjee who used to work with the victim in NBSTC at Cooch Behar. Chatterjee had an earlier marriage and had two sons. Police also said that Chatterjee used to visit the victim at the latter's house.
Local people on Saturday morning found the front door open and the body of the victim lying on the floor. After being informed, police reached the spot and sent the body to MR Bangur hospital for the post-mortem examination. According to police, there were no external injuries on her body. The investigating officer is waiting for the post -mortem report which would ascertain the exact reason behind her death.
The victim's husband told the police that everything in the room remained intact and nothing went missing from the house. Chatterjee, who was currently touring the city stayed in a city hotel on Friday night. He went to the house of his wife on Saturday morning. The local residents told the police that the victim used to stay at a rented room situated on the ground floor of the building alone.
Police said that one door was open while the other door of the room remained locked from outside when the body was recovered. Police are yet to ascertain the cause of her death. Police are not, however, ruling out the possibility of murder. Police are interrogating her husband in this regard.
Senior police officers and state forensic experts also visited the spot on Saturday morning to conduct the probe.
