A 60-year-old man committed suicide by jumping in front of a Kavi Subhas-bound Metro at Rabindra Sarovar Metro Station on Tuesday morning.
Metro services from Maidan to Kavi Subhas remained suspended from 11.30 am to 12 noon, causing harassment to hundreds of commuters. However, the Metro service from Maidan to Dum Dum remained unaffected.
Police said the victim, Dulal Banerjee, was a resident of Chandi Ghosh Road near Regent Park in south Kolkata. Police came to know from other commuters that they had seen him loitering aimlessly on the platform at Rabindra Sarovar, but they did not think that was planning to jump in front of a train.
He was continuously staring at the tunnel to find whether a train was coming or not. He was restless and jumped all of a sudden in front of the train that entered the platform at 11.30 am. The train was so close that the driver couldn't stop despite applying the brakes. The security personnel rushed to the spot and senior Metro Railway officials were informed. The victim's body was sent for an autopsy and the Metro service resumed at 12 noon.
The police initiated a probe in this connection and trying to find out the reason that forced the man to commit suicide.
