Nine arrested with firearms, explosives from Serampore

Hooghly district police arrested nine persons with firearms and explosives early Tuesday morning. The accused persons had bought arms from a dealer in East Burdwan on Monday. Acting on a tip-off, Hooghly Police arrested them from Serampore and seized the firearms and cartridges.

"These criminals had assembled to loot a house in Serampore. But before they could carry out their plan, our officers arrested them from the spot," said a police source.

The process of capturing illegal arms and ammunitions was accelerated after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee gave a stern warning to every district police administration to step up vigilance and and find out bomb manufacturing units, particularly, in sensitive areas, where crude bombs related explosions had taken place.

Meanwhile, Hooghly Police recently arrested one Kashinath Dey, a crude bomb maker. According to a police source, Dey gave some important information regarding the arms racket in the district.
"Criminals are getting regular supply of arms from the areas outside district. We will cut the supply lines and arrest them," the source added.

It may be mentioned that Chief Minister had instructed the state police to leave no stone unturned to seize the illegal firearms hidden across the state.

She said that bomb manufacturing will not be allowed and police will have to seize all the arms and ammunitions as quickly as possible.
