In a bid to restrict the entry of outsiders in the campus, the University of Calcutta authority has decided to check identity cards of students during their entry. The authority has already informed the students about the decision.
It may be mentioned that the university authority earlier had decided to install Closed Circuit Televisions (CCTV) to get rid of this problem as well as address issue of student clashes. In the past, there were isolated incidents in which outsiders managed to enter the campus. Student clashes inside the campuses were also not unknown.
On Tuesday, Registrar of the university checked the identity cards of students at the main gate of University's College Street campus. Later, he said that this drive was necessary to protect the university from outsiders.
The University authority clarified that security personnel will check identity cards of students and staff and the others entering the campus will have to register their names, phone numbers and other details before entering the campus. The authority has also decided to change old identity cards and issue new ones soon. Ashutosh Ghosh, Vice-Chancellor of University of Calcutta earlier had informed Millennium Post that the CCTV footages amount as strong evidences in cases of student clashes and the Kolkata Police had suggested the University authority to install them.
The workers' committee of the University recently took several measures to strengthen the maintenance of the properties inside the campus. "This university has several campuses across the city — from north to south Kolkata and in Salt Lake. In view of proper maintenance of the properties, the committee members have discussed the issues and quick actions will be taken," said a University source.
It will be recalled that the Vice-Chancellor had specifically mentioned that a few outsiders had allegedly disturbed the academic atmosphere in the respective campuses of the University. After the installation of surveillance cameras, security personnel would keep a close watch on the entry and exit of visitors in the campuses. Students and staff members will have to show the identity cards while entering the campuses.
The UGC has instructed the universities across the nation to install CCTVs in students' hostels to control incidents of ragging. The installation of surveillance cameras is also a part of the maintenance of properties.
