Berhampore: Truck rams into roadside garage, three killed

Three persons were killed after a truck rammed into a roadside garage at Berhampore in Murshidabad on Tuesday early morning.

Police said that the victims Nidhu Swarnakar, the owner of the garage, 12-year-old Mainak Das and a 15-year-old boy Bimal Mondal were run over by the speeding truck when they were sleeping in the garage.
A police officer said that the garage is situated beside Berhampore-Lalbagh Road. The police came to know after speaking to some local people that all three victims used to go home only on Saturday night and they used to stay in the garage for the rest of the week.

In the wee hours on Tuesday, the truck which was heading towards Berhampore rammed into the garage.

Police suspect that the driver of the truck had fallen asleep and could not control the speeding vehicle after taking a sharp turn and brushed past a roadside tree before hitting the garage.

Local people went to the spot after hearing a loud sound and found the front portion of the truck inside the garage which was completely damaged.

The driver of the truck managed to flee before the local people reached the spot. The locals informed the police. Despite their efforts, the local people failed to push the truck out of the garage. Finally, the police used a crane to remove the truck.

The police found Nidhu writhing in pain with injuries all over his body while Mainak and Bimal were unconscious.

Local people and police took all three of them to Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital where all three were declared brought dead.
The police are taking steps so that such accidents can be avoided in future.
