Unidentified woman's body found beside canal

Mystery shrouds the death of an unidentified woman whose body was found beside a canal at Diamond Harbour in South 24 Parganas on Monday morning. Police said that the locals saw the body when they came out of their houses early in the morning and promptly called the police.

The cops suspect that the woman was raped and then killed. The body has been sent for post-mortem.

"The woman was raped and then killed somewhere. The body was then dumped beside the canal. The miscreants chose the area to dump the body as the place is deserted and poorly illuminated. There are several injury marks all over her body which suggest that she had tried to prevent the miscreants when they attempted to kill her," said a police officer.

The police contacted all the other police stations situated close to the spot of the incident to find out if any complaint of a missing woman had been lodged. But they found nothing as such that made the task of identification of the woman even tougher.

"It is difficult to comment before getting the postmortem report. The investigation can only proceed further after the post-mortem report will come to us," the officer added.
