The Bidhannagar City Police have begun strong surveillance at entry-exit points of Salt Lake in its recent bid to strengthen safety and security of the citizens, especially at night.
Senior officers of the city police recently studied the previous records of crime in the area in which they found that incidents of robbery and snatching were frequent before the time of Durga Puja.
The officers also found that the miscreants used these entry-exit points to escape after committing the crime.
But surveillance only at night won't help much to stop incidents like robbery or snatching. Senior officers believe that day-long surveillance at the entry-exit points is required. "Previous records indicate that the incidents of robbery increased before Durga Puja of yesteryears. Therefore, a special drive is really necessary to launch such a drive," said a police source.
Residents have also been requested to cooperate with the cops. "We have requested residents to inform us if they see any suspicious persons loitering in their locality," the officer added.
Police added that there were several incidents of robbery and snatching reported in Salt Lake area during June, July, September and October in previous years.
Miscreants used to break the main door of the houses open and looted valuables from the house owners at gunpoint. Bike-ridden miscreants snatched ornaments from residents and fled the spots. But in each of the cases, miscreants managed to leave the town without any hindrance.
"The officers will check suspicious vehicles entering and moving out of Salt Lake. Such checks will continue after Durga Puja as well," a source added. Recently, the police have arrested four persons from Salt Lake's Sluice Gate late at night when they were preparing for a robbery. Acting on a tip off, the investigators arrested from the spot. The accused persons, Raju Mondal (19), Shekh Milan (20), Saddam Sardar (18) were produced before the court.
"Such robbers used to get an easy route to escape from Salt Lake. But now surveillance at the entrance-exit points is stiffer," the source added.
It may be mentioned that the police officers hold regular meetings with block committees where security issues are discussed. Police have advised the block committees to hire trained security guards.
