The city witnessed light to moderate rain recorded at various parts on Sunday. The Regional Meteorological Centre, however, said a heavy rainfall is expected on Monday as well.
Kolkata experienced a persistent dry and hot weather for the past few weeks. But the weathermen on Sunday specifically mentioned that a low pressure was developing over northwest Bay of Bengal adjacent to Odisha coast. The low pressure would bring moderate to heavy rainfall over this region. "Thundershower may hit the city during the afternoon hours or evening on Monday after the formation of convective clouds," said a meteorologist.
On Sunday afternoon, some South Bengal districts witnessed rainfall accompanied by squall. Rainfall was recorded in the districts including Nadia, Hooghly and some parts of East Midnapore, Howrah, South and North 24 Parganas.
The sky remained cloudy on Sunday morning. The day time temperature in the city was 30 degrees Celsius, which was much below in comparison with the early days in this month. But the humidity was quite high, recording around 85 percent.
The MeT department predicted that temperature would fall by some degrees. A senior meteorologist in the Regional Meteorological Centre added that two low pressure areas were earlier created over Bihar and Jharkhand that might have led to another low pressure above Bay of Bengal. The sky will remain overcast in some parts of the state on Monday.
"Kolkattans should be ready for rain. It may continue for an hour or more on Monday," the senior meteorologist added.
It may be mentioned that there was no immediate prediction of rain in the city as the MeT department had recently said that the onset of monsoon in the city will take some time. Citizens were happy to witness rain on Sunday.
"It may be pre-monsoon rain for the low pressure on Bay of Bengal or a proper monsoon shower. The reason for this rain is irrelevant to us. We are really enjoying this rain as you can see," said a citizen.
Skymet weather, a private weather forecaster said that Diamond Harbour recorded 8 mm of rainfall, Midnapore 6 mm, Bankura 3 mm, Canning and Bagati 2 mm while Burdwan recorded 1 mm of rainfall from Saturday to Sunday evening. The temperatures may drop significantly over Kolkata leading to pleasant and comfortable weather conditions for the residents.
