Class X girl suicide: Youth, his mother charged with abetment

The family members of a 16-year-old girl who committed suicide, lodged a complaint with the police bringing abetment charge against a youth and his mother.

The incident took place at Bamungachi in North 24-Parganas. The victim Anwesha Chatterjee, a student of Class X committed suicide inside her house on June 7 after she was allegedly threatened by the accused of dire consequences if she refused to accept his relationship proposal. The victim's parents went to Duttapukur police station and lodged a complaint that a local youth, Mriganka Das and his mother instigated the girl to commit suicide. They also told the police that the accused had given her a mobile phone so that he could talk to her. The accused and his mother have been absconding ever since the incident had taken place.

The family members of the victim told the police that the accused used to continuously disturb the girl. The victim's elder sister was also threatened by the accused on a social networking site. When Anwesha's parents left the house, the accused youth and his mother used to visit the victim's house and used to pressurise her to enter a relationship with the accused.

The accused had proposed the girl and she had refused. After coming to know about the incident, the victim's parents decided to lodge a police compliant against the accused but later backtracked fearing that it could tarnish the image of the girl. The family members demanded stern action against the accused. Police were also investigating why the victim had taken the mobile phone from the accused. The victim's family members said that she had taken the mobile
phone as she had been under psychological pressure. Police have started a detailed probe in this regard.
