The Calcutta University (CU) authorities on Thursday cancelled a political science question paper for BA examination and this led to an agitation by the examinees who staged demonstration outside the College Street campus of the university.
It was learnt that the students were supposed to take two papers of political science in two phases. At the time of the first phase of examination, an invigilator from a college mistakenly opened a question paper which was actually meant for the second phase of the examination scheduled to take place at around 2 pm.
As the matter was reported to the senior university officials that the political science question paper which was for the second phase of examination was mistakenly given to the students appearing for the examination, they decided to cancel Thursday's second phase of political science question paper. As the examination was cancelled, many students thronged outside the CU's College Street campus protesting against the cancellation of the examination. The incident took place when the state Education minister Partha Chatterjee was at the university to attend a programme. However, police brought the situation under control.
The students immediately attracted the attention of the invigilator saying that they were given the wrong set of question paper. The invigilators went through the question paper and informed the matter to the concerned department when the university authorities decided to cancel the examination. The university authorities have started a probe in this regard to look into how the goof up had taken place.
It may be mentioned that on last Monday, the university authorities cancelled the third paper of Bengali (H) question paper of the second year BA examination. The second year students of Bengali (H) were writing their fourth paper when they were mistakenly given the second paper question paper.
A senior university official said that they are examining if there was any negligence on the part of the college authorities. The matter will be looked into, the official assured.
